Arnold S. Johnson - Chairman, Board of Directors

Following ten years in the insurance industry as a retirement plan specialist, Arnold S. Johnson formed Universal Pensions, Inc. (UPI) in 1975. Johnson served as CEO and Chairman of UPI until its sale to BISYS (now Ascensus) in 2001.

Thomas G. Anderson - CEO

Thomas G. Anderson has more than 25 years of experience in the retirement and financial services industries. Anderson has managed all aspects of a retirement organization – from strategic planning to sales and operations – and has served as lead negotiator on dozens of acquisitions. 

In addition to his experience in managing and consulting with businesses in the financial services sector, Anderson has showcased his retirement technical subject matter expertise as a speaker at industry conferences and a consultant to financial professionals. 

Anderson began his career as a Certified Public Accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co. In 1980, Anderson joined Universal Pensions Inc. (UPI) and played a key role in developing and growing the company into a major player in the retirement services industry. At UPI, he held a number of management positions including ten years as President and COO. 

Anderson also served as Executive Vice President with BISYS (Ascensus) where he was responsible for managing a broad line-up of retirement products and services – overseeing every stage of the product from research and development to sales and fulfillment. 

In addition, he has held the position of CEO or COO in a number of other non-retirement related companies. Anderson has served as a director for six private companies and over a dozen non-profit organizations.

Anderson attended Oxford University before receiving his BA from the University of Minnesota. 

Pamela S. O'Rourke - SVP and Managing Principal

Pam O’Rourke has been active as an ERISA attorney and consultant in the retirement and financial services industries for more than 25 years. Prior to joining Integrated Retirement, O’Rourke held positions as Senior Vice President of ERISA Compliance and Senior ERISA Counsel with BISYS (Ascensus) from 2001–2008. 

Prior to BISYS, O’Rourke spent 13 years with Universal Pensions, Inc. (UPI) holding various legal, consulting, and management positions, including Vice President and General Counsel (1998–2001). 

O’Rourke is a highly sought-after speaker at industry conferences, addressing a variety of retirement plan issues including ERISA fiduciary standards. While at Integrated Retirement, she has designed curriculum and drafted content for retirement industry certification programs for both TPAs and financial advisors and has developed customized in-house professional development programs for a broad spectrum of financial organizations.
In addition to her retirement industry activities, O’Rourke is an active board member and volunteer for a number of non-profit organizations focused on expanding local businesses and broadening access to post-secondary educational opportunities for area students. 

O’Rourke received her B.A. degree from Moorhead State University and her J.D. from Baylor University School of Law, Waco, TX. O’Rourke holds the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation granted by the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Certified IRA Services Professional (CISP) and Certified Retirement Services Profession (CRSP) designations granted by the Institute of Certified Bankers. She also maintains the Associated Professional Member (APM) credential through ASPPA.

Jayne Fahlen - VP, Business Development

Jayne Fahlen has been involved in business development in the retirement industry for more than 20 years. During her 12-year tenure with Universal Pensions, Inc. (UPI), Fahlen held evolving roles – a client relations representative, a major account coordinator position within the Consulting Group, and went on to become internal sales manager for the Retirement Products and Services unit. Fahlen was the recipient of a number of sales achievement and customer service awards and when UPI was acquired by BISYS, earned an Excellence in Leadership award through a process that included her direct reports, peers, and executive management. 

Following BYSIS (Ascensus), Fahlen held sales positions with firms representing various segments of the retirement industry, including Sales Director at RolloverSystems, Inc. an IRA marketing firm; Strategic Sales Director at Goldleaf Partners, a TPA and consulting firm; and Vice President Business Development at Millennium Trust Company, an individual tax-favored account custodian and administrator. 

Fahlen graduated Magna Cum Laude from Moorhead State University with B.A. degrees in Psychology and American Studies.

Todd Berghuis - Senior ERISA Counsel

Todd Berghuis has been active as an ERISA attorney and consultant in the retirement and financial services industry for more than 30 years. Prior to joining Integrated Retirement, Berghuis held the position of Senior Vice President of ERISA Compliance with Ascensus from 2008–2016. Prior to that, he served as as Vice President of ERISA Compliance for Ascensus (formerly BISYS) from 2001–2008. 

Berghuis spent two years with Universal Pensions, Inc. (UPI) holding various legal and consulting and management positions and was with Collin Fritz & Associates, a pension consulting firm, from 1985–2000. 

Todd is a frequent and highly regarded speaker at industry conferences and retirement plan programs for attorneys, financial organizations, financial professionals, and trade associations. He has conducted hundreds of programs around the country for financial advisors, trade groups, financial services firms, and plan sponsors on a variety of retirement topics including ERISA fiduciary standards and the Conflict of Interest rules, plan design, legislative and regulatory updates, retirement plan compliance topics, and ERISA best practices. 

Berghuis has been active on a number of industry committees focused on shaping retirement plan legislation and regulations including the SPARK Government Relations Committee, and ASPPA’s Government Affairs Committee where he currently serves as the chairman of the DOL subcommittee. 

In addition to his retirement industry activities, Berghuis is an active board member and volunteer for a number of non-profit organizations focused on conservation. 

Berghuis’ role at Integrated Retirement includes technical research, writing and designing retirement plan content and training programs, compliance support for financial organizations, and speaking engagements at national and regional conferences. He also serves as a liaison to the IRS, DOL and key congressional offices and committees that have an impact on qualified retirement plans for Integrated Retirement. 

Berghuis received his Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in 1985 and a B.A. degree from Concordia College in 1982. He is a member of the American and Minnesota Bar Associations and holds the APM designation from ASPPA.

Anissa E. Langhorst

Anissa E. Langhorst - Editor / Consultant

Anissa Langhorst has been a writer, editor and consultant for the retirement plans industry since 2001. Prior to joining Integrated Retirement, Anissa spent 11 years in these roles for the Retirement Products and Solutions division of Universal Pensions, Inc. (UPI)/BISYS/Ascensus.

During her tenure with Ascensus, Anissa managed a team of technical writers and consultants, producing retirement plan and IRA reference manuals, newsletters, and online content for financial professionals. She also drafted course manuals and designed curriculum for national conferences, live and recorded webinars, video productions, and online schools. At Integrated Retirement, Anissa writes and edits customized content and training curriculum for financial advisors, plan sponsors, recordkeepers, and TPAs, balancing technical information with practical business development solutions. 

Anissa received a B.A degree in English from St. Cloud State University and a paralegal certificate from the MN Paralegal Institute. Anissa holds the Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) designation from the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) and the Certified IRA Services Professional (CISP) designation granted by the Institute of Certified Bankers (ICB). She has also served on the CISP Advisory Board. 

Mary Goeman - Manager of Technology and Implementation

Mary Goeman has been designing and creating marketing and LMS programs in the retirement plans and marketing industry for over 15 years. Prior to joining Integrated Retirement, Mary spent 9 years as a marketing coordinator, project manager, and senior retirement services help desk representative for the Retirement Products and Solutions division of Universal Pensions Inc. (UPI)/BISYS/Ascensus, as well as other local area companies.

While at Integrated Retirement, she designs, builds, and implements animated, scripted eLearning courses and quizzes for intranet, on-demand, webinars, and live presentations. Mary also formats and designs whitepapers, industry articles, and newsletters. She utilizes multiple LMS software applications to develop online quizzes, LMS interactions, on-demand presentations, videos, and audios to enhance and streamline the end users’ learning experience.

Peter D. Mithun

Peter D. Mithun - Senior Client and Project Management Specialist

Pete Mithun has worked in the retirement plans industry for more than 15 years. He began his career in retirement plan recordkeeping at BISYS Retirement Services (Ascensus), working in both the client service and corporate training areas. Pete has also worked for TPA Goldleaf Partners, gaining extensive experience in plan administration and relationship management by supporting 130+ plan sponsor clients and plan advisors in day-to-day plan activities. 

Pete is an experienced trainer having developed and delivered retirement plan education to a wide variety of audiences, including advisors as well as operations and compliance staff. Pete also specializes in creating procedures and workflows to enhance business processes and in using technology such as Salesforce and plan administration software systems.

Pete graduated from Concordia College with a B.A. degree in Business and minors in Spanish and Office Administration. 

Pete holds the Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) designation from the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA).

Pamela Himes - Senior Trainer

Pamela Himes has been a technical consultant in the retirement plans industry since 1987. She has more than 26 years of expertise in the areas of Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEPs, SIMPLEs and qualified plans. 

Prior to becoming an independent consultant, Pamela was with PenServ Plan Services. During her 18-year tenure at PenServ Plan Services, her primary function was as a retirement plans trainer and was well known for her ability to make difficult rules easy to understand. In addition to training, she drafted IRA newsletters, administrative forms, technical manuals and educational retirement plan materials. Pamela also served as an IRA technical hotline specialist to financial organizations across the nation. Pamela is a graduate of East Texas State University with a B.S. degree in Education. Pamela holds the Certified IRA Services Professional (CISP) granted by the Institute of Certified Bankers.

Patricia Advaney

Patricia Advaney - Principal, Advaney Associates, LLC

With more than 20 years of experience in the retirement plan industry, Pat brings broad expertise in participant/customer experience, communications, marketing, investments and strategy to her role with Integrated Retirement. 

Prior to consulting, Pat held senior roles at Transamerica Retirement Solutions (formerly Diversified Investment Advisors), where she had responsibility for all aspects of the plan participant experience. This included developing a highly successful targeted email campaign, launching a mobile app and Facebook page, and creating customized web portals. During her tenure, she also spearheaded the development of a proprietary target-date solution, a personalized retirement income gap analysis, a plan health scorecard, and a plan design cost/benefit analysis tool. Pat has led teams of more than 200 employees to develop innovative solutions. 

Earlier in her career, Pat collaborated with financial experts to develop online learning content. In addition, she was part of the internal team that managed the defined benefit and defined contribution plan investments for International Paper, where she also created an investment education program for the company’s 80,000 employees. 

Pat is a thought leader on retirement readiness initiatives and has authored several articles and white papers on plan design and participant engagement. She has also developed and delivered keynote conference presentations on topics such as behavioral finance and millennial attitudes toward retirement and saving. 

Pat received her B.A. degree in English from Vassar College and currently resides in the New York City area with her family.  
Carol Ball Johnson

Carol Ball Johnson - Consultant

Carol Ball Johnson has worked in the retirement industry for more than 30 years in a number of different capacities. Carol’s work experience includes retirement plan consulting and conducting seminars on IRAs and qualified retirement plans nationwide for Universal Pensions, Inc. Carol also worked for 10 years with Honeywell, Inc., serving as both the manager of the department administering pension benefits for acquisitions and divestitures and the implementation manager of the corporate benefits customer service department covering Honeywell employees across the United States. For the past 15 years, Carol has worked for third party administration companies, including Goldleaf Partners, where she was instrumental in building the retirement administration area from a handful of plans to over 1,000 plans. 

Carol has won numerous awards and recognitions in the areas of customer service and leadership. She has served on panels and forums at retirement industry conferences. Carol graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. degree in Business-Economics. 

Susan MacCargar - Graphic Designer

Susan MacCargar brings over 15 years of marketing, advertising, and design experience to the Integrated Retirement team. Throughout her career, she helped a diverse list of global brand names (e.g., Lance Snacks, Muzak, Bank of America, Lending Tree, Ernst & Young) develop comprehensive marketing solutions through web design, branding strategy, and corporate communications. 

Prior to consulting, Susan served as the Creative Director and VP of Communications for RolloverSystems. As a part of this start-up organization, she helped develop, produce, and execute the company's consumer and business positioning and communication strategy. Charged with brand management, media planning, trade event presence/scheduling, and consumer-targeted marketing campaigns, she helped the start-up company become well known in the retirement industry. 

With a successful and solid background in creative direction, her passion and energy have played a significant role behind the brand leadership and product awareness for these companies.

Anne M. Archibald

Anne M. Archibald - CFO

Prior to joining Integrated Retirement as a consultant and Chief Financial Officer, Anne Archibald held a number of senior finance positions in the financial services industry. From 2001–2008, Archibald served as Vice President and Controller of one of Canada’s largest money managers, independent investment counseling firm Greystone Managed Investments, Inc. Prior to Greystone, Archibald spent three years as a member of the finance team at Co-Operators Life Insurance Company and has held senior finance positions in two manufacturing companies. In addition to her experiences relating to the internal and external financial reporting and oversight, Archibald was accountable for compliance with regulatory agencies and federal taxing authorities. 

After attending the University of North Dakota, Archibald obtained the designation of Certified Management Accountant from the Society of Management Accountants of Saskatchewan and is a graduate of the Executive Master of Business Administration Program at Athabasca University Center for Innovative Management. 

Thomas M. Rutske - Vice President

Thomas Rutske has been active as a human resources director in the retirement industry for over 15 years. Rutske achieved the designation of Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) granted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  

Rutske entered the retirement industry in 1985 when he joined Universal Pensions, Inc. (UPI). Rutske was instrumental in UPI’s growth from 60 employees to 500 employees. 

In addition to his work in human resources, Rutske has more than 30 years of experience in business ownership and management, including five years in real estate brokerage and appraisal, 25 years in ownership of two Dairy Queens and five years in ownership of a sign manufacturing company.
